We are affiliated with Boston Area Youth Soccer, Inc. ("BAYS") and vie against teams from other towns. Since we are at a geographical comer of the BAYS region (and of three other travel leagues, so pick your poison), the five away games played by each travel team each season usually involve a one-way trip of 30 to 60 minutes. Travel teams are selected at meetings held by the Division Directors and attended by coaches. Typically these meetings involve at least the coaches and assistant coaches of all the prospective travel teams and the Division Directors. The aim is to have as many involved informed opinions as practicable, and to have folks at the meeting with personal knowledge about each player under consideration.
The process is not perfect, but we are trying. Players are selected on the basis of (1) their interest in playing on a travel team, (2) their coaches' past and present evaluations (giving most weight to the most recent evaluation) and (3) the observations of Division Directors and coaches at the meetings, and recent game, practice, indoor, pick-up and skill day environments, where applicable.
All players in the under13 age group and older currently play on BAYS-affiliated travel teams. This is due to decreasing numbers of registered players as they grow older and the transition from 6v6 or 8v8, to 11v11 soccer. As a result, we cannot form enough town teams to make up a sensible schedule of town games. Under 11 travel players use the 6v6 format. The under 12 age group transitions to 11v11 soccer.
